Why Sakuya Killed His Fiance, And Why I Think ''Boku ga Kimi wo Koroshita Riyuu'' Is a Mediocre CD - an essay by Eri.

Please note that this is not a review, but more of an analysis of the CD and why I think it was mediocre. I originally wanted to post it as a reply on tumblr, but it turned into a full essay and I didn't want to post a wall of text like this on tumblr.  So again, this is not an actual review. What I am doing is closer to dissecting the story (and it's flaws)

The Story

The CD starts when you 'wake up' and see Sakuya, who explains that you are dead, and that he is the one that killed you. You are currently in the afterlife. He tells you he will explain how you ended up like this, and that this explanation starts 7 day ago. After this the CD counts down to the day of your death, from Sakuya his perspective.

The first scene between the two of you is that you are shopping. You just picked up your wedding ring for your wedding, which is in 7 days. Quick calculation tells us that means you die on your wedding day, nice. While you are out Sakuya notices you coughing.

Next scene is Sakuya arriving at work and noticing that there are a lot of people absent. When he sits down a newspaper falls (out of his bag? from the desk?) and he remembers an article about an unknown disease spreading. (it is literally called ''kibyou'' meaning ''strange disease''). Sakuya re-reads the article, which states that the disease starts with a headache and that it has caused several deaths...

Next scene is when Sakuya gets home. While waiting for you to get home Sakuya watches the news and sees a report about a traffic incident. This triggers a flashback from his childhood; the traffic accident where he lost his father. Apparently they were driving to the airport to go on an overseas trip for his birthday. For some reason his mother is not there in his memories. (More on this scene later). This accident also caused amnesia - he has no memories from before the accident.

He is pulled back to reality by your entering the room. You visited the hospital on the way home (more alarm bells), it will take a few days before you get the results of your tests however. Sakuya makes you some hot milk, but you drop the mug and cut yourself. He cleans the wound by sucking it, noting that your blood 'tastes strangely sweet'. At this point I was afraid we would end up with a vampire story, but thankfully we a spared from that. It is still important later on though.

A few days later Sakuya receives a call from the hospital you went to, telling him to come alone. He is instantly worried so he leaves for the hospital right away. The doctor who called him greets him with ''long time no see''. Apparently he was an apprentice of Sakuya his father, but Sakuya doesn't remember him. The doctor tells him that having no memories is no surprise after that incident in the past.

More worried about your condition however, Sakuya asks about the test results. This is where the CD goes overboard. Apparently the strange disease always results in death, and it is not only spreading in Japan but in the entire world. However, they discovered an anti-virus in your blood. Thus, they want you to return to the hospital for tests so that they can develop an antidote. The catch is that you would become a human vegetable in the process. Sakuya immediately yells he won't allow that because you are more important than all of humankind to him. To which the doctor replies that he deliberately infected you with the disease, so that you will HAVE to come to the hospital.

Sakuya is obviously shaken by all of this, and skips work the next day. While doing this he has another flashback, but this time not of the accident but of what seems like a fire, and a woman trying to save him. Because he never saw any of these scenes in his flashbacks before he is understandably confused. This is when he realizes that the doctor said incident and not accident when talking about his memory loss.

Thus Sakuya decides to research whether there where any news articles about a fire which could be related to this. And of course he finds one that fits, it pictures a lodge (probably something like this) which is also pictured on the single family photo he has left. The news article mentions there was a fire, causing the death of one person and heavily injuring another. Because his mother is dead, Sakuya logically assumes his mother died in the fire.

(meanwhile, Sakuya has more flashbacks of a girl with a doll in a red dress, and your condition gets worse, although it could be just fatigue from overwork)

The day before the wedding however, Sakuya accidentally finds a box with all of your old dolls and plushies. Which (surprise surprise) contains the doll with the red dress from his flashbacks. This triggers him to remember everything, and to resolve to kill you. Which he does the next day on your wedding, he stabs you in the back when you give each other the ceremonial kiss.

From here on we return to the afterlife, where Sakuya explains the rest. I will do the same, but a bit more pragmatically because this essay is getting long enough as it is.

Explanation and Motives

You were friends with Sakuya when you were little, and the two of you really liked each other. Sakuya his family was on vacation near where you lived, and when the time came for him to go you didn't want him to leave. Thus you resorted to childish tricks like hiding his things so he couldn't leave (accurate child logic btw). You sneaked into the lodge at night to do so. Unfortunately you were carrying an oil lamp (or something similar) and at some point the whole place went up in flames.

Sakuya got caught in the flames and died, his mother sustained heavy injuries in her desperate attempts to save him, and would later succumb to these injuries. However his father was researching cloning, and succeeded in cloning Sakuya - the current Sakuya is a clone of the original, and this is why he has no memories from before the car accident, that was the day he was ''born''

This takes us back to the scene of said accident. Sakuya remembers this as his was father taking him on overseas trip for his birthday. It is more likely that he was fleeing overseas with the cloned child.

Although the article does not mention a second death, Sakuya deduces that there was - you died in the fire as well. This means you are a clone as well, the proof of this is the sweet taste of your blood (this is retro actively confirmed by the last scene). 

And THAT is the reason why Sakuya kills you, because the two of you are clones. Not because he doesn't want to sacrifice you to save the world, not because you caused the death of his mother and himself, destroying his life, but because you are clones. More specifically, because he is a clone and suddenly feels like he is just a shadow of the 'real' Sakuya and has no right to live. Note that he apparently decided this seconds after realizing the truth about himself. And his conclusion is to kill you, despite the fact that he still loves you and wished for you to be happy. This makes no sense to me.

The ending and its implications

After Sakuya his explanation has ended and he says goodbye, saying you will go to heaven and he will go to hell, there is a small bonus scene. At first this seems like a ''dream end'' where the entire story turns out to be a dream;

Sakuya wakes up after drifting off, mentioning he has a strange dream but can't really remember what is what about (It sounds like you are on a train or something). His finger hurts, and he mentions he cut himself this morning while making breakfast. The band-aid has slipped off, and you suck his finger to clean the wound, and mention that his blood tastes sweet. Sakuya declares this nonsense and changes the subject, saying that he is looking forward to how the wedding ring will turn out.

Now this scene was awesome for two reasons. First, it subverts the ''dream end''. This scene actually takes place one week before you pick up your wedding ring. Meaning that everything else still very much happened.

Second, you mention Sakuya his blood tastes sweet. Remember that Sakuya said the same about your blood earlier in the CD. With Sakuya definitely being a clone, this proves that you are, indeed, a clone as well.

Commentary on several of the scenes

The opening scene was pretty good to be honest. You are dead, but don't know why. The man who was your fiancé tells you he killed you. What happened? Why would he do that? The start is pretty intriguing actually. 

The first real problem is the scene where Sakuya reads the newspaper. It is so incredibly artificial it hurts. I understand that it can be difficult to introduce a topic in a CD with only one seiyuu (and thus no one to bring up the topic) but it is basically forced down your throat. Combining this with your cough from the scene before sets off an amount of red signs and alarm bells that can't be ignored. And while they don't play it completely straight, you do end up infected with the mystery disease.

Next comes the scene at the hospital. First of all, your blood having the (only) anti-virus for a disease which threatens the world sounds too fantastical to me. But there are more things wrong with this scene. I might not have much medical knowledge, but I do not see why you have to become a human vegetable from their tests. If they discovered the anti-virus in your blood, wouldn't that be all they need? Sure, giving a lot of blood (for a possibly prolonged time) would weaken you, but the worst that would happen is that you have to stay in a hospital bed for a while, not die as is heavily implied here.

(Keeping you alive is in their best interest as well, so it is reasonable to assume they would not take so much blood that they would kill you).

Another thing that bothers me is the doctor saying that he infected you with the disease when you came for a check-up. That would mean that they ran tests on your blood immediately after taking it (highly unlikely, it will probably get send to a test centre) AND immediately discovered that there was an anti-virus in it (even more unlikely, that would take extensive testing).

Also, as your blood had the only known anti-virus, Sakuya basically doomed humankind by killing you. Unless they salvage the blood from your cold, dead body or discover a new anti-virus we will all die slow and painful deaths caused by the mystery disease.

Plotholes and other rants.

• The doctor infecting you with the mystery disease as mentioned above, as this would mean he basically infected you before he even knew you had the anti-virus.
• For that matter, why extracting the anti-virus from your blood would result in your death.
• Sakuya seeing flashbacks from before the car accident. Cloning duplicates the body, not the mind. 
• You being a clone. The newspaper article does mention Sakuya his death but makes no mention of a second body.
• Even if they only discovered your body later, how did you return to a normal life after being born as clone? There is no indication of you having a strange past anywhere in the story.
• Why are there two clones out in the wild, both without any supervision? It is hard to imagine they would just let you go.
• Your (and Sakuya's) blood being sweet. If you are just a clone there is no reason for this, unless they used medicine/genetic manipulation to stabilize the clones. it did make for an awesome moment in the ending though.
• It sounds like there is no one present at the wedding, why not?
• Sakuya is the afterlife as well, but this is not explained anywhere. I guess we'll just have to assume he committed suicide after killing you.

Ono Daisuke his Performance

While I have a lot to say about the rest of the CD, I have little to say about OnoD his voice acting. It was neither bad nor really good. I'd be surprised if such a high profile seiyuu gave a bad performance to be honest, but it didn't really move me either. 

A lot of that can be attributed to the writing I suppose; I was getting increasingly annoyed with the story and it would have taken a truly astounding performance to save it. Unfortunately there was no real room for that. 

So I'll go with ''good''. There weren't any bad moments so that makes it good, it just doesn't manage to impress beyond that (in my opinion).

Conclusion

The concept and start of the CD were promising. Unfortunately the plot ends up as too cliché, with a couple of gaping plot holes to make the situation worse.

I wanted to like this CD, I like mystery stories like this and it had the potential to be heartbreaking. Bitter-sweet would have been a good alternative, but in my opinion the CD barely reaches even that level. 

Yet, for all it's flaws, the ending is amazing. When it seemed like they were going to pull a dream end I nearly stopped listening right there. The last thing I needed after a story I hardly enjoyed was a ''just kidding!!'' moment. I'm glad I kept listening though, because it was a well executed double plot twist. If anything, I will be remembering this ending for a long time.

Wow. I just wrote almost 2500 words on the flaws of a drama CD, haha. Even my incredibly long Wasurenagusa reviews are still only about 1500 words!

While I had fun writing this, this post does not mean I will return to a regular posting schedule any time soon. It was more like something I needed to get out of my system. Basically this entire post is a rant that is pretending to be coherent.

iPhone App: 3D Sound Horror ~Meijou~

Reviewing something slightly different this time. 3D Sound Horror Meijou is an iPhone app that is probably best described as a mix between and audio drama and a visual novel. It uses some visuals so it is not pure audio, but it isn't as elaborate as a visual novel either (to begin with there are no visuals for the characters). Just as the title implies, it is a horror story that uses the dummy head mic to create 3D sound effects. I guess it is mostly aimed at women, although this only becomes clear near the end of the story and I think you can enjoy the story no matter your gender.

Meijou tells the story of four friends who travel around looking for haunted spots. Chika (CV: Hayami Saori), the only girl in the group, has found an old letter that talks about a haunted cave. Enclosed with the letter was a small charm with a bell on it. The group decides to investigate this.

The story starts with the four of them arriving at the cave. It is raining outside, and while all of them find the atmosphere rather creepy they came here to investigate the cave so they enter it anyway. The cave seems to be made by human hands, and they discover something like a living room inside. But before they get chance to properly investigate an earthquake happens and the entrance collapses. To make things worse, their flashlight also stops working.

Chika  her phone

While they are still panicking Chika her phone suddenly starts ringing. At first they think it is a mistake, but it starts ringing again a few seconds later. Chika answers the call but all she hears is noise. A few seconds after that she gets a text message which reads "go deeper", followed by a lot of gibberish.

As they venture further into the cave the calls continue and you can start to hear voices in them, and to make things worse the group ends up separated from each other and they have to try and find each other as well as the way out again. As you proceed it slowly starts to become clear what happened in the cave.

When the group finally manages to get together and find something like an exit near the end another earthquake happens, and a large rock falls down and all three guys reach out to you to save you. At this point you are presented with a choice: grab the hand of one the guys (you can pick who) or escape on your own. The ending differs depending on what you choose.

The story is split up into two apps, so to get the entire story you'll have to buy both. I think it is worth it though. Also: the app is compatible with both iPhones and iPods (and iPads) but because of the calls you receive I think listening to it on your phone has the best effect. Whenever you get a call the image on the screen switches to the standard call screen so it really looks like you are receiving a call, which adds to the creepiness .

Unfortunately the rest of the visuals are not that effective. Most of them are either to blurry or to dark to properly see what is pictured. Although I admit that the one where the ghosts try to grab Chika really freaked me out (especially because it moves). Still, the concept is interesting and I think the end result is pretty good.

The effect of the dummy head mic can't always be heard. When you are normally talking with everyone it isn't really noticeable, but you obviously do hear it when you are close to someone (like when they try to cheer Chika up or in some of the endings) and it was used pretty effectively during the calls and for some of the scare effects. Personally I like this balance, this way it feels special when it is used.

For those who are not that good with bad endings: rest assured, there is no real bad end. The main difference for the endings is who saves Chika and gets to be her main love interest. None of the endings show you getting together though, it is more like hinted at that there might be something there. There is only one ending where you unravel the entire story though.

When I listened to it I got the idea that there might be something between Yuuma and Chika, which was backed up by the fact that he is the one that stays with you when you pick the "escape on your own" option, but to my surprise it was not his ending that tells the entire story.

I don't really see why they split this thing into two apps though. It is not like it is that big as a whole either, so it feels sort of cheap to have us buy two apps to hear the entire story. Both apps together are still much cheaper than your average drama CD though, so in the end I was fine with the price. Something random that I noticed: when you first start the second app the music playing at the start screen is ominous. After you finished one of the endings however it switches to a more serene music.


Conclusion:
This was a good story, it becomes less scary towards the end but I guess that is natural as you start to understand what is going on. While most of the visuals were not that special, they way they used the call- and message screens was super effective. After hearing more horror stories that make use of the dummy head mic I can only say that the dummy head almost seems to be made for this; there is nothing as scary as ghosts talking right next to your ear.

Kuroko no Basuke Sound Theater 2nd Games

Kuroko no Basuke is a basketball manga serialized in the Weekly Shounen Jump, and follows Kuroko Tetsuya and his team mates at Seirin High. During middle school Kuroko was part of the "generation of miracles", 6 extremely talented regulars on the Teito Gakuen basketball team. All of these players went to different high schools, and of course Seirin will have to face them one by one. This CD has little to do with all of that though. Instead, it features a story about the Teito Gakuen school festival, when everyone was still in attending there.
 

The story starts with Kise (CV: Kimura Ruouhei) helping Momoi (CV: Orikasa Fumiko ) carrying some bags full of provisions for the Toou baseball club. To thank him she offers to buy him a drink somewhere, and they run into Kuroko (CV: Ono Kenshou) inside the shop. Momose accidentally drops a picture of all of them that was taken at the school festival, and so they start to reminisce about that time.

I could give an endless summary but in short: Momoi hears a rumour that if a couple wins the stamp rally that is held by the quiz club that they will stay together forever, so she wants to join together with Kuroko, who wants the figure that is the first prize so he agrees to join. Aomine (CV: Suwabe Junichi) wants the figure as well, and he ends up pairing up with Kise (who was looking for a partner, because there were so many girls that wanted to be his partner that they stated fighting amongst each other).

The stamp rally itself features some rather strange things as well, they have to cross the sports ground which has been rigged with pitfalls, and the things they need to collect as one of tasks are rather vague. Aomine and Kise have "hero sanjou!", so Kise starts to impersonate all kinds of hero's, Kuroko and Momoi have "kai wo kaigaeshiku kaesu" (to give back a seashell to someone who wants it, but the point here is obviously the pun), so they steal Midorima (CV: Ono Daisuke) his lucky item of the day and he chases them through the entire school.

Before all of this we also get to hear Kuroko being a butler (because his class is doing a butler cafe) and Murasakibara (CV: Suzumura Kenichi ) impersonating Marie-Antoinette, to hilarious results. And while everything is going on, Akashi (CV: Kamiya Hiroshi) is winning every single board game there is and collecting an enormous amount of prizes.

I really love this story. It shows how everyone was while they were at Teikou and they just seem to be having so much fun. It makes me wish for more material about that time, while also making my heart ache seeing them as they are now.

For some reason I found Akashi his parts especially hilarious. While everyone else is running around in chaos he is calmly winning board games, and every time he does it the sketch follows the exact same pattern and the prizes get more and more luxurious (one year long free food tickets etc etc).

While most of the story is complete crack, it does have some more serious moments near the end. The whole reason Kuroko wanted the figure was to give it to Aomine, to thank him for encouraging him to keep playing when Kuroko was thinking of stopping. 

The surround sound effect from last CD is still there, but I didn't notice it as much this time.

In the freetalk Ono Kensho says he was very nervous being surrounded by senpai seiyuu. Kimura Ryouhei once again does his freetalk as "Kise Ryouta". During the entire freetalk everyone calls each other by a nickname, usually the first part of their character name+"chin" (Kuro-chin, Mido-chin, Mura-chin), even thinking of nicknames for the members that only voiced a few lines on the spot xD


Conclusion:
This made me want to see more of the Kiseki no Sedai era!! Everyone just seems so happy together it just breaks my heart to see them as they are now (but I love Seirin as well so I want to see more of them as well). I hope that they will continue releasing drama CDs like this. Meanwhile, I think I'll try to locate some of the short dramas that came with the limited editions of the DVDs.

Ketekyo@ is all about... a home tutor? There is really no other way to put it. Of course the personalities of both the teacher and student are weird enough to make this interesting. To avoid confusion: this has nothing to do with the Katekyo BL manga series.


In this CD we have Murou Yoshinari (CV: Ono Daisuke) as the teacher, and Asano Kouta (CV: Ichiki Mitsuru) as the student. Yoshinori is your typical everything-under-control perfect type college student. Kouta on the other hand is a brat who is more interested in girls, having fun, and is always typing mails on his phone.

Like I said, Yoshinari seems like the everything-under-control and strict type, but when Kouta starts to talk about girls and asks him whether he has a girlfriend he pushes some sort of switch and Yoshinari loses his cool. And his dialect starts showing (Tossa dialect, which is Ono-san his actual dialect btw).

After Yoshinari loses his cool he keeps on ranting in dialect about how Kouta his future will be bleak if he doesn't start to think about what he wants to do later, how love isn't important and that a student should focus on studying alone. Meanwhile, it is obvious how Kouta is only interested in dating girls and having fun.

Just as Kouta really pisses Yoshinari his chihuahua comes walking into the room, and Yoshinari his mood instantly changes. Turns out he really loves dogs, and he starts talking about the dog at home and his family situation (which sucks to be honest). In the end Kouta decides to properly study just to calm down Yoshinari, who keeps on ranting none the less.

Of course, Yoshinari is an English teacher, so he has to show some skill in talking. Ono-san his "there is no use crying over spilt milk" is pretty hilarious, especially because the way he uses it seems off xD. In the end through all of his ranting Kouta actually feels like studying - which seems to be exactly as Yoshinari planned it (so it was all an act and he is a cool type after all?).

As soon Yoshinara his Tossa-ben started showing I was all (*´Д`*). Dialect!! I think I love dialects more than I realize (gap moe?!). Anyway. Yoshinari seems far from cool, but his rants are hilarious and Kouta his attempts to keep up always fail or he makes a remark that makes Yoshinari rant even more. This time there doesn't seem to be a 'several years later' track, which is a pity because I would have loved to hear that.

The free talk is nearly as long as the entire story. It is fun to hear them talk together. Ichiki-san apparently researched Ono-san (on yahoo) before the recording and starts to recount an entire profile xD They end up talking a bit about dialects, and apparently Ichiki-san was born in Kyuushuu but doesn't speak the dialect.Near the end they start to plan another CD with a pretty girl as a home tutor, and they hope that one day something like that will be released as well.

(After listening to this free talk I keep wanting to say Ichiki-kun because Ono-san calls him that, but he is still several years older than I am xD)


Conclusion:
Midorikawa-san his otome character in the other CD was brilliant as well, but Ono-san his character wins thanks to the dialect (this is actually the first CD, so I'm glad that I listened to them in the wrong order). I need to find more things with dialects...

Chou Sekkingata Sasayaki Micchaku CD ~DJ Chakumitsu no Radio Haran Bang☆Joe~

Sasayaki Micchiaku is a series based on stories of being really close to someone (physically). In this first CD, DJ Chakumitsu (CV: Ono Daisuke) hosts the fictional radio show "Haran BANG☆JOE" in which he answers letters from listeners. The theme for this weeks broadcast is 'micchaku' (being very close to something). Part of the CD is recorded with the dummy head mic, so you really get a of feeling 'being close'.

The CD begins with Chakumitsu complaining that women are aliens or monsters, apparently he just broke up with his girlfriend and kind of heartbroken. He is still complaining when the show starts, but he quickly switches over into his radio personality. Which is brilliant by the way. He talks with a very overdone fake accent which is probably supposed to be American but is simply way over the top. He throws in random English words and phrases as well.

He starts the show with introducing the topic of the week, realizing that he chose 'micchaku' as theme and regretting this because he is currently heartbroken. To top things off the listeners apparently sent three times as many submissions as normally. He starts reading out letters, which we get to hear as re-enacted scenes. Obviously these are the scenes that have been recorded with the dummy head mic.

The first one is a submission from a salaryman who ran into an old acquaintance (probably a kouhai?) in a rush hour train. Because the train is completely packed they end being squashed together, and of course he tries to protect her while being flustered himself as well.

The second and third stories are from high school girls. One about a piano teacher who tries to convey his feelings but fails because the girl doesn't get it (even though it was really obvious) and one about a classmate trying to confess his feelings during the school trip. Because they are out after hours they need to hide from a teacher together, and end up squashed together in a small room. Once again the girl is to naive to understand what was going on.

The final story is really sweet, about a guy trying to cheer up a 'room mate' who is down, saying that he will never leave her and so on. Eventually it turns out that he is talking to his dog though xD. This one has a short follow up in which the dog comes to wake him up in the morning.

Between these dummy head tracks Chakumitsu comments on the situations, either complaining about his own heartbreak or cheering on the listeners. After the final story he says that the submissions gave him new courage as well, and that he will report next week as to what he means. He also announces that the theme for next week will be 'revenge' (when used in Japanese リベンジ ribenji "revenge" means something like re-challenging or a rematch, so obviously this hints that he is going to try and get his girlfriend back).

I didn't expect the CD to start with Chakumitsu complaining about his break up, and his continued overdone self pity really amused me. Normally this kind of character voice really annoys me, but because it is so overdone it was fun to listen to. The different dummy head tracks show off his different voices (although all of them are within the nice guy / perfect boyfriend spectrum) which is always interesting to hear. The scenarios are slightly overdone but it is fun to listen to. If I had to choose I think I like the piano one the most.

Ono-san starts the free talk still in Chakumitsu mode, but quickly switches back to talking normally. He is very lively during the free talk, which makes it a lot of fun to listen. He says he doesn't have many 'micchaku' experiences, and eventually talks about sento (public baths). That there is usually a place where you can sit to cool down after taking a bath, but because everyone is naked that would that you would have to sit somewhere where someone else his 'important parts' just touched and that he feels uneasy about that xD (I am now really curious about what kind of free-talk he will do for the upcoming Ofuro de Noboseru CD xD). He evades the question what kind of micchaku story he would make if he was the producer, saying that it "would be to eroi".

Interesting detail: apparently they moved the dummy head mic around for several of the scenes. In the one where he was talking to the dog the mic was on the ground, and he was sitting next to it, and for the one where the dog wakes him up he was actually lying on a couch.

There is a final secret track in which Chakumitsu calls his girlfriend/ you to apologise and ask whether you can start over again. He turns up on your doorstep at the end of the call being all sweet. (apparently you broke up because you kept saying you like a certain idol a lot xD)


Conclusion:
Chakumitsu his overdone radio personality is really lovable, if slightly annoying. The dummy head parts are extremely sweet but fun to listen to. But what I love most about these kind of CDs is that you can hear one seiyuu acting out several roles. Hearing them do all kinds of different voices is amazing no matter how many times I hear it.

Shinrei Tantei Yakumo ~Akai Me ha Shitteiru~

Shinrei Tantei Yakumo (Psychic Detective Yakumo) is a novel series by Kaminaga Manabu about Saitou Yakumo, a university student who can see ghosts. The series has manga, anime, and live action adaptions, but sadly only 2 drama CDs. Akai Me ha Shitteiru ("de red eye knows") is the first novel, and this is a drama CD is an adaption of that novel. The two stories on this drama CD are "Akezu no Ma"(The closed room) and "Toneru no yami" (The darkness of the tunnel), although I am not entirely sure whether the second story was orriginally published in the first novel as well.

The story begins with Ozawa Haruka (CV: Hirano Aya) searching for Yakumo because she needs his help. Her friend Miki recently collapsed and Haruka thinks this is because Miki is possessed by something. She heard that Yakumo is supposed to be knowledgeable about ghosts and things, so she comes asking for his help. Yakumo explains that he can only see ghosts and can't exorcise them, but that he will try to help her in exchange for money. She doesn't believe that Yakumo can see ghosts at first, but when he tells her about the ghost of her dead twin sister she starts to believe it (after completely freaking out first).

They visit Miki at the hospital, and Yakumo comes to the conclusion that she is indeed possessed by a ghost. She is possessed by the ghost of a girl about their age, who seems to be really scared of being trapped somewhere. They decide to go to the place where Miki claimed to have seen something just before collapsing. There they are confronted by the killer, who became spooked because the police is investigating the area. With the help of the ghost of Haruka her sister they manage to evade his attacks and trap him, after which they call the police.

Haruka meets the police officer Gotou Kazutoshi (CV: Touichi Hiroki), who seems to be familiar with Yakumo. She also discovers that Yakumo his left eye is red, as the colour contact that he uses to hide it fell out during the fight with the killer. To Yakumo his surprise she says that it is beautiful; up to now he only met people who were scared of it or found it creepy. It is later revealed that his mother even tried to kill him because of it, and Gotou was the one who saved him at the time.

In the second story Haruka gets a ride home from a friend, who wants to show her the night view from a spot he knows instead of driving her straight home. On their way there they drive to a tunnel, and he suddenly hits the breaks claiming that there were kids on the road. Haruka steps out of the car to check whether they hit someone, but there s nothing there. The next morning however there is are red marks in the shape of a small hand on the bumper of the car that won't come off no matter what. Because of this Haruka decides to ask Yakumo for help again.

The animosity between Yakumo and Haruka her co-worker is brilliant. Yakumo says he doesn't care whether Haruka is dating anyone or not, although it is kind of obvious that Haruka is special to him because she was the first one to say that she liked the colour of his red eye. He warns the guy that he should properly perform a mizuko kuyo ritual. At first he pretends not to know what Yakumo is talking about, but it turns out several of the girls he was dating got pregnant and had to have an abortion. After ths he just storms out.

Eventually Yakumo does agree to go and check what is going on with the tunnel though, so he and Haruka borrow a car from Yakumo his uncle Isshin (CV: Narita Ken) and drive to the tunnel. It turns out that many many spirits of people who have died there are gathered in the tunnel, all waiting to cause the next accident and add another soul to the group. Yakumo says he can't to anything about this, and simply warns Haruka to never drive through here again.

When he meets her co-worker several days after that, there is a spirit of a small boy sitting on his car, which puzzles Yakumo. A little later Gotou visits Yakumo with a picture of the heavily maimed body of a small child that died in a traffic accident, hoping that Yakumo can identify him. Yakumo immediately concludes that the spirit sitting on the car is that same boy. Unfortunately, Haruka got tricked into going for another drive with her co-worker at the same moment, and the spirit is leading the car to the same tunnel from before. As soon as Yakumo and Gotou learn this, they rush of to save her.

That was a rather detailed summary... sorry about that. But the actual solutions are still unspoiled, and a detective story isn't complete without the solution so you can all still go and listen to it, haha. (^-^;;).

I admit that the cover was what got me interested in this CD. And I felt like listening to a scary story so that was perfect timing. In terms of scariness, I've heard scarier but this CD does a good job at slowly scaring you. There are no sudden scare moments, but more a slowly building feeling of uneasiness (although I have to admit that I hate that tunnel, especially because the story ends without anything being done about it).

I love Yakumo his personality. He is rather blunt and sarcastic, but does have a kind heart and in the end is always willing to help others. When he was younger he didn't realize that he was the only one that could see spirits, and untill he realized this he was always seen as weird or creepy. To make things worse people were also freaked out by his red eye, so he eventually grew up to be rather antisocial. After meeting Haruka he starts to change a bit, although this CD doesn't really show this.

Haruka is rather naive but very honest (to a fault really), which makes her almost the opposite of Yakumo. I like the two of them together. I'll have to admit that Hirano-san her voice sounded slightly boyish, so I spend a good portion of the first story wondering whether she is a girl or a really femine guy (the name Haruka can be used for both guys and girls) until it was finally confirmed somewhere in the story (^-^;;).

The free talk was a lot of fun. Hirano-san messed up the introduction, and Ono-san his save is really cool. Somehow the two of them seem really used to each other and their conversation is a lot of fun. I also love the theme music (the song that plays at the beginning of this track) it reminds me of a matsuri or something.


Conclusion:
This story is not too scary, but just scary enough. I love sarcastic characters so Yakumo was a perfect lead character for me. It is too bad that there aren't many drama CDs for this series though, although I suppose that I could always watch the anime or live action to see more. I honestly have no idea when I started liking horror stories though, considering that I used to too scared to real/listen/watch them (still am, actually).

Message 4 U is a series in which the postmen of the Mitsubachi (honey bee) post office deliver a message to you in a very special way. When they receive a letter it gets scattered through time, and you yourself have to find several messages before it becomes a whole letter again. These messages are in places that have something to do with the contents of the letter.

The third CD is titled “Thank U a lot” and the letter is a letter from a good friend to express her thanks. The postmen ‘delivering’ the letter this time are Serge Benoit (CV: Ono Daisuke) and Patrick di Tommaso (CV: Terashima Takuma). In the first track the letter is delivered to the post office, after that they take you on a tour through your memories to find the messages.

After postmen with English and German names I expect two French names, but one of them seems to be Italian, hihi. Thanks to being the strong silent type Serge is often seen as scary, while Patrick is very open and more cheerful. Ono Daisuke often voices the perfect boyfriend in situation CDs, but this time his role is very different, which is kind of refreshing.

Serge already manages the person that wants to deliver the message as soon as she enters the post office. Luckily Patrick is there to help. He also wrote Serge a script for explaining how the letters work because Serge apparently often fails to explain things properly. Thanks to the script they actually manage to explain things properly this time. Although Serge is obviously reading stuff from the memo. This is also the only CD where the characters don’t argue about who gets to use the time travel book.

Like always you are taken to different scenes from your past. This time we have a fireworks show, a park at night, in a cafe, at school, and the first day of school when you met. There are a few things different from the first two CDs though. Instead of finding the message after you have seen the scene, there are a couple of times where you find the message and still have to watch part of the memory, or figure out what it means before you can continue.

Serge and Patrick also take a little longer to fall for you. Patrick his attitude towards you remains largely the same, but Serge clearly needs some time to warm up to you. On the other hand, Patrick also realizes how important his friendship with Serge is to him while watching your memories.

One of the biggest changes though, is you actually asking them to read the final letter with you. This was a welcome change for me because that is one thing that really bugged me in the previous two CDs. After that they take you to the beach to watch the sunset, where Serge also shows his kindness by waiting just a little longer before taking you home, so that you can spend a few more minutes together.

Overall it felt like this third CD was a little bit more structured. You asking the postmen to read the letter together with you was more logical than them being the only ones able to read it. And there was a little less focus on the characters liking you and a bit more focus on them. I noticed that the letter have a trump theme, and the way the website would have had room for one more CD in the layout so I’m wondering whether they originally planned one more CD. If so, it is a pity that it was never produced, because this one was definitely better than the first two.


Conclusion:
Still as sweet as ever, but with a bit more structure and therefore my favourite of the three CDs in this series. Ono Daisuke voicing a more silent and stubborn (yet shamelessly honest) character was also a nice surprise.

Kuroko no Basuke: Drama Theater 1st Games

Kuroko no Basuke is a basketball manga serialized in the Weekly Shounen Jump, and follows Kuroko Tetsuya and his team mates at Seirin High. During middle school Kuroko was part of the "generation of miracles", 6 extremely talented regulars on the Teito Gakuen basketball team. All of these players went to different high schools, and of course Seirin will have to face them one by one. This summer an anime adaption started airing, and this drama CD is officially based on the anime, even though it features a completely original story.

In fact, the story has little to do with basketball this time. Seirin was supposed to have a practice match, but thanks to a miss by the other school the gym is already in use by the mama-san volleyball team (volleyball for  middle aged women). Everyone concludes that there is no way they can win the gym from them, so they decide to give up on the match. But since they've already traveled all the way there, they decide to go to the nearby amusement park.

Once there everyone wants to do something different, and they split up. Kuroko (CV: Ono Kensho) and Kagami (CV: Ono Yuuki) end up going to the food court, where they run into Kise Ryouta (CV: Kimura Ryouhei) who just finished a modeling job there. They decide to hang out together a bit, and Kagami has just won a stuffed toy from a crane machine when they run into Midorima Shintarou (CV: Ono Daisuke) who is there looking for his lucky item of the day. As luck will have it the stuffed toy Kagami just won is what he is searching for, and thus they decide to have a match to decide who gets the toy.

All of the matches they hold have nothing to do with basketball though. The first one is a match to see who can make the best puns, Riko (CV: Saitou Chiwa), Hyuuga (CV: Hosoya Yoshimasa) and Itsuki (CV: Nojima Hirofumi) are the ones that come up with this. The second match is telling scary stories, Koganei (CV: Eguchi Takuya), Tsuchida (CV: Inoue Gou) and Mitobe (who doesn't talk -ever- and isn't voiced by anyone) are the ones who thought of that. the first year members Furihata (CV: Mizutani Naoki), Kawahara (CV: Yoshimoto Yasuhiro) and Fukuda (CV: Sasaki Hiroo) miss their chance because they are in the ferris wheel and no one notices them. The final match is a sumo event that is held at the theme park, and eventually all four of them need to work together to beat an actual sumo wrestler.

First thing about this CD: if you don't know the series (manga or anime) it isn't going to be much fun to listen to. The CD assumes you know everyone and doesn't introduce anyone, and continues a couple of running jokes (Itsuki his puns, Mitobe not speaking, Kuroko being invisible, etc). If you do know the series though, this CD is pretty much gold. Only the characters introduced in the anime at the time of release are featured, but on the other hand it also uses the same background music, which makes certain scenes hilarious.

Midorima and Kise are two of my favourite characters, so this was gold for me to begin with. But the rest of the characters also get their funny moments. Two scenes with the other characters that I loved were the first years lamenting that no one knows who they are, and Koganei imagining everyone as hero's, which is followed by a short sentai parody.

Something else I loved is how they used a 'surround sound' effect. When the characters are talking in a group you can hear that they are standing in different positions, as if you are really there standing among them. I don't have an actual surround sound system to test whether this is actually surround sound or just very clever use of stereo sound, but it is interesting none the less.

In the free talk everyone is definitely having a lot of fun. Apparently they turned Kuroko his name into a verb ("kuroko-ru") with the meaning "to disappear", and Ono Kensho was very good at doing that during the recording. Kimura Ryouhei never mentions his name but simply does his freetalk as Kise, and Ono Daisuke uses a lot of the stock phrases for Midorima in his part. The rest switch between making semi-serious comments and absolute chaos, especially near the end (when they are running out of time) some of them stop in the middle of their talk and make way for the next person xD


Conclusion:
If you know the anime this is definitely worth a listen. It doesn't deal with basketball, but the story is pretty fun and uses all of the lovable quirks of the cast. I hope they'll release more of these when more members of the generation of miracles are introduced, and although a serious drama CD might be interesting too, this is a perfect way to have some fun with the characters.

Episode Zero is a series of lightnovels based on Final Fantasy XIII. This drama CD (that came with the first press limited edition of the OST for the game) is based on the first light novel. It depicts scenes from the 13 days leading up to FFXIII.

The CD starts with Lightning (CV: Sakamoto Maaya) on a mission hunting monsters, she is aided (against her will) by Lebreau (CV: Asakawa Yuu) and Yuj (CV: Hatano Wataru), two members of the vigilante group Nora. After returning from her mission she finds her superior Lieutenant Amodar (CV: Ueda Yuuji) and Nora leader Snow (CV: Ono Daisuke). This is the first time Lightning and Snow actually meet, and she warns him to stay away from her sister.

Doesn't seem to have much effect though, as Snow later meets up with Serah (CV: Kotobuki Minako) because they are planning to buy a present for Lightning her birthday. Serah want Snow to come so that she can properly introduce him to Lightning. Before they can go Snow is called away by fellow NORA members, but promises he'll return soon and tells Serah to wait.

Serah wanders off to the ruins nearby the city, and to her own surprise finds and entrance. As she walks further in the ruins start to move around her, leader her to the point where she is branded with her l'Cie mark. She wakes up a little later outside the ruins, despairing after seeing the mark.

Meanwhile, Lightning is walking through town preparing for her patrol shift during the upcoming fireworks. In the background we hear Zachs (CV: Ebara Masashi), Hope (CV: Kaji Yuuki) and his mother talk about chocobo's. The CD ends with Lightning talking to her commander whether she could get some time off to take a vacation with Serah.

If you don't know the game this CD probably isn't very interesting, you'll be wondering when something is finally going to happen. If you do know the game, this is one big all my tears. It depicts scenes from right before the start of the games, how everyone is just living their life before everything is thrown into chaos.

Despite it being very short (only 25minutes) it is a pretty emotional piece of work. Not because of what happens, but because of how normal things are in the CD. How everyone is dealing with their own daily business and (compared to the rest of the game) small problems.


Conclusion:
Just this small drama isn't worth it to buy (and track down) a limited edition soundtrack, but as a bonus it is a very good one and if you've played the game it is worth it to download and listen to it. I'm wondering exactly how long the novels are, and whether I should give those a try at the moment.

Penguin Enishi

I didn't know what to start with after the hiatus (there is so much I need to catch up on!) so I eventually decided to go for the review that spent the most time as a pile of notes:

Penguin Enishi is a story about a small shrine in that is nicknamed 'Penguin Shrine'. The head priest recently died, leaving the shrine in the hands of his two sons, Miki and Tane. However neither of them is an official priest, and if the head office doesn't send a new priest, the shrine will be abandoned.

Miki (CV: Ono Daisuke), the oldest of the two, is trying to obtain his qualification as priest. But even though he gets the top score at the exam, he has no supernatural abilities and therefore fails the exam everytime. Meanwhile Tane (CV: Shimono Hiro), the younger one, does seem to have abilities, but he is still in high school and cannot become a priest yet. The two of them are actually half brothers, they have a different mother.

A little while ago a talking penguin calling himself Enishi (CV: Nakata Jouji) suddenly appeared at the temple, claiming that he is a god. Miki is sceptical, but Tane is overjoyed so the penguin gets to stay. Now all he does is eat a lot and cause trouble in the neighbourhood (although he does claim that he can be useful, stating excellent skills with word and excel among his strong points).

Meanwhile Hazumi Ten (CV: Sakurai Takahiro), who is Tane his halfbrother (although Tane refuses to see him as a brother) and works as a police officer, brings along the ghost of boy (CV: Suzumura Kenichi). The only thing the boy remembers is Miki his name. While trying to find out his identity, they discover that his name is Nishimaki Kento, and that he was a year under Miki and Ten while they were at high school, and slowly they start to discover why the only thing that he could remember was Miki his name...

Between all of this there are scenes with Chidou Nene (CV: Maeda Ai), Ten and Tane their mother. She left her first husband (Ten his father) and remarried Chidou Daiju (Miki and Tane their father) but left the house and has been living on her own for a while. Nene seems to have become the love interest of Ichikawa Tadamaki (CV: Koyasu Takehiro), although his motivations can be doubted, and neither does he seem to be entirely human...

I'm trying to summarize all this while trying to avoid spoilers, as this is an interesting story. Not all is as it seems in the beginning, and there are some interesting developments. There is a lot of humour as well; especially Enishi is a good comic relief. The pacing of the story was really good as well, and I'm interested in seeing how it will develop (especially with regards to Ichikawa his intentions).

In this review the relations between everyone may seem a bit hazy, but it is all very simple. When in doubt, just take a look at the character chart on the official site here.


Conclusion
A good story, not too much supernatural activity, the right amount of humour and penguin induced chaos, and lots of potential for the next part. Also Koyasu-sama and Sakurai, just saying.

DAISUKE! ~Senritsu no Brithday! Revenge ni kita Aitsu~

DAISUKE! is a CD in which all characters and their seiyuu have 'Daisuke' as their first name. The setting is the bar 'Dice' (Japanese: daisu) which is ran by Akagi Daisuke and somehow seems to be a gathering point for people with Daisuke in their name.

All of the characters were introduced in the first CD so they don't bother to do it again this time. But to make some short introductions: Akagi Daisuke (CV: Ono Daisuke) is the owner of the bar Dice, Wakaba Daisuke (CV: Namikawa Daisuke) and Touma Daisuke (CV: Sakaguchi Daisuke) work there as parttimers. Yamabuki Daisuke (CV: Kishio Daisuke) is a failure salaryman, and Kurokawa Daisuke (CV: Hirakawa Daisuke) is a super rich celeb IT manager. To avoid confusion and stop the abuse of the name Daisuke, I'll just refer to them by their last name from now on.

Kurokawa feels somehow defeated by Akagi and thus he comes for revenge! The moment he enters the bar however, he is showered with champagne and birthday wishes. Turns out the rest of the cast was planning to celebrate Touma his birthday and they mistook Kurokawa for him.

The rest of the CD is once again divided between imagination scenes, and what is actually going on at the bar. Each Daisuke imagines how his white day gift would be, with the exception of Yamabuki who imagines you as a married couple with kids for some reason:

Touma takes you on a date to the park
Wakaba performs a tea ceremony for you
Yamabuki takes you out for dinner
Akagi takes you skydiving
Kurokawa gives you an entire resort Island

Of course, all of the 'virtual dates' as they are called are full of lovey dovey romance lines, and the Akagi and Kurokawa ones are hinting a much more.

Meanwhile in the bar, everyone starts to get drunk, leading to more and more chaos and hilarity. Until there is a blackout and Akagi is knocked unconscious by an intruder. It turns out that a certain company has it's eye one the building, and is pressuring him to sell the bar. Just as he tries to say that he probably should sell it and start a new bar somewhere else, Kurokawa stops him.

Turns out Kurokawa was planning on taking revenge by opening a bar close by, so he can't have Akagi leave. The two of them have a drinking contest to decide what will happen to the bar, and both of them drink far too much shots of tequila (with full commentary by Yamabuki). Kurokawa loses, and orders his own company to but the company that was after Akagi his building with a simple phone call.

Like the first CD this is a hectic, chaotic and hilarious CD full of Daisuke in every way possible. I still find the way Yamabuki talks and the way Touma acts annoying, but I have gotten more used to Hirakawa using a deeper voice for his role as Kurokawa Daisuke. I still think it sounds a bit unnatural, but I'm somehow getting used to it, maybe even started to like it a bit.

Again the cast talk is chaotic, and this time there are far too many in-jokes that I don't get. It still is funny to hear them bicker though. There is a tokuten CD (I don't know what it came with) in which they are playing some sort of game. Unfortunately I'm not sure what they are playing, making it a bit difficult to understand


Conclusion:
Chaos, Hilarity, and a Daisuke overload all over again. Honestly, there are much better drama CD's out there, but the pure overkill of hearing all of these seiyuu together is amazing.

Moegaku ~Moe Koi Gakuen Seitokai Shikoubu~

モエガク！～萌恋学園生徒会執行部～

This CD was available through the Kuchikomi and Toukou Magazine. Despite the similar titles, it has absolutely nothing to do with the Moe Koi drama CD's from the same magazine. Well except for both being parodies, and Kamiya Hiroshi and Ono Daisuke appearing in both of them.

The setting is the Moe Koi School. Up until now it was an all girls school, but recently it opened up to guys as well. There are still only a few guys, and there is a visible gap between the boys and girls. Many of the girls don't know how to deal with the boys.

Our main characters are all members of the student council: the incredibly narcissistic Senzaiin Rihito (CV: Fukuyama Jun),  his personal butler and secretary Ichinomiya Banri (CV: Hosoya Yoshimasa), the vice president Momose Kakeru (CV: Ono Daisuke) and the accountant Togashi Yayoi (CV: Kamiya Hiroshi).

Rihito finds a love letter in the student council question box. The letter has no sender, nor an addressee, but Rihito is convince that it is intended for him. In order to draw out the sender, he organizes the "summer communication festival" (shortened to "natsucomi") under the pretence he wants to improve the communication between the boys and the girls in the school. Meanwhile, Kakeru also thinks the letter is intended for him, and Yayoi -due to a misunderstanding- thinks it is a letter from Kakeru to him.

For the festival, all the girls are given special bows and arrows (made by the ridiculously influential and rich company that is owned by Rihito his family) which they have to use to try and shoot the guys in the student council. If the guys are hit, they have to grant the wish (any wish) of the one who shot them. The arrows are made so that they don't hurt anyone, but none the less Kakeru delivers a spectacularly cliché death scene when he is first hit.

Of course the wishes are full of fanservice. From Kakeru having to say sweet lines -or scold someone-, to Yayoi wearing nekomimi and saying "~nya", or even Banri stripping naked, to all of them being involved in a weird fairytal play in which Rihito tries to kiss them, fanservice all over the place. And while the girls are trying to catch Yayoi and Kakeru, they in turn try to find Rihito and the love letter.

When all of the chaos from the festival is over, a girl comes to the student council room to say who the letter was intended for. Each character gets a sepparate "love message" track in which they are they one that receives the letter. Especially Banri (who normally acts as Rihito his perfect butler) his track is very cute.

Of course this is a parody work, so expect many references to popular series. Some of the most blatant ones are Maria-sama ga Miteru and One Piece (look a flying pirate ship!!) but there are many more works and clichés referenced. But more than anything it is a hilarious story that is guaranteed to make you laugh.

Despite Kamiya Hiroshi and Ono Daisuke both being in both this drama and the "Moe Koi" series, the story and the characters they play haveabsolutely nothing to do with each other.

Perhaps just as funny as the drama is the exceptionally long cast talk (it is 20min, for a normal cast talk that is long). Each of the seiyuu answer a few questions: "What if they were the only guy in an all girls school" "If they were a girl, which character would they want to confess to them", "What do you want someone to say when they confess to you", and finally "What type of girl do you want to confess to you". OnoD his answer for the last two questions was hilarious: "doesn't matter. I want someone to confess to me". And that while the others have proper (and long) answers xD

ps: the booklet has a really cute short comic about how the recording went. Especially the drawing of Kamiya losing a part of the script was so cute!!


Conclusion:
